Overview

With a master’s degree in biotechnology by Johns Hopkins, and a bachelor of science from the University of Western Ontario with an honors double major in genetics and cell biology, Sheena Wang brings a background in both law and science to her role, integrating both in support of the firm’s IP practice and clients.

In her day-to-day work, Sheena handles a wide range of intellectual property issues. She supports Rothwell Figg attorneys in patent prosecution, patent litigation, client counseling, and trademark cases. In patent prosecution, she conducts research and drafts documents to help develop overall strategy. Prior to becoming an associate at Rothwell Figg, she conducted freedom to operate and patent landscape research for viral vector technologies, and legal research to help develop strategies for post-grant proceedings at the USPTO. With respect to litigation, she has conducted legal research for various projects, primarily in the pharmaceutical space. Her research for one of those projects led to co-authoring an article with Jenny Colgate, a partner at the firm, entitled “Foreign Patent Damages Recovery Two Years After WesternGeco,” discussing extraterritorial patent damages.

Before joining the firm, Sheena conducted research on a wide range of topics, including polymorphisms associated with various autoimmune diseases, and genetic markers for use in plant classification, identification, and phylogenics studies. She also has wide-ranging knowledge of the pharmaceutical industry through her work in various phases of the drug development process. These include vaccine analytical development, and clinical trials from both laboratory and clinical settings. In addition to her scientific experience, she has worked in the IP department of a biopharmaceutical company, which helps her understand the needs of pharmaceutical clients.

In law school, Sheena and her team took third place in the USPTO National Patent Drafting Competition. She also coauthored a law review article entitled “An Inside History of the Burger Court’s Patent Eligibility Jurisprudence” with her law professor. The article has been published in the intellectual property edition of the Akron Law Review. During her final year of law school, she interned at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit, giving her an invaluable perspective on appellate patent litigation.  

As a practitioner, Sheena excels at rapidly absorbing information, and working closely with client teams. She’s detail-oriented, thorough, and excels at collaborating with other attorneys on complex projects. A hard worker and a problem solver, she strives to learn about new technologies, and help inventors overcome the challenges they may face in bringing their innovations to market.
