While some countries have enacted comprehensive privacy and data protection laws, like the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR), the United States does not have a single, comprehensive federal law regulating the collection, use, and disclosure of personal information. Instead, U.S. privacy and data protection legislation is comprised of a patchwork system of federal and state laws and regulations - hundreds of them! The chapter in the Guide aims to identify and provide some guidance regarding the state privacy and data protection laws.
