Brian Banner will represent the Section of Intellectual Property Law, American Bar Association at the "Centennial of Airplane Patent Ceremony" to be held by the Aviation Heritage Foundation in Springfield and Dayton, Ohio on October 4-6, 2006. The statue of Harry Toulmin, Esq. of Springfield, Ohio, who was the Wright brothers patent attorney, will be unveiled in Springfield at 4:30 p.m. Toulmin eventually won this patent for the inventors (granted as U.S. patent number 821,393, "Flying-Machine", on May 23, 1906) and spent much of the rest of his career helping enforce it. Remarks will be delivered by both Bill Neukom, President-Elect of the American Bar Association and Mike Morris, a representative from the Turner Foundation. The airplane patent is one of only two patents granted in perpetuity, the other being the telephone patent.
A panel discussion on Lawyer’s Role in Innovation will be held afterwards at the University of Dayton Law School. On the panel will be A.P. Carlton, past president of the American Bar Association, Bill Neukom, Jesse Jenner of Ropes & Gray, Professor John Fitzgerald Duffy, George Washington University Law School, the Honorable Larry McKinney, Chief Judge, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Indiana, and John Doll, U.S. Coommissioner for Patents. The panel event will be attended by UD Law School faculty and students and will be open to the legal community as a continuing education opportunity. |
