JAMES K. CHANG
Associate


James Chang is an associate working primarily in the firm's prosecution and counseling practice areas. Mr. Chang's practice focuses on material science, mechanical engineering, and medical device applications. Mr. Chang has worked on patents in specific technical areas including: solar-control glass coatings for architectural and photovoltaic applications, fiber-optic probes for tissue analysis, in vivo sensory devices, and automated diagnostics. His opinion and counseling expertise includes preparing freedom to operate/clearance opinions and counseling as to the scope, validity, and enforceability of rights of existing patents. Mr. Chang's prosecution experience further includes extensive interaction with inventors to develop applications, as well as management and substantive prosecution for ex-U.S. counterpart patent applications in multiple jurisdictions.

Mr. Chang has also been involved in pro bono litigation matters, working on a copyright infringement case filed in the Southern District of New York as well as working to ensure the franchise of a religious group for a special election in the District of Columbia.

Mr. Chang graduated from The University of California at San Diego in 2001 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Bioengineering – Biotechnology. Prior to entering the legal profession, Mr. Chang was employed in the medical device industry, working as part of an assay integration team adapting chemistry tests that screen for HIV, hepatitis, and West Nile Virus onto an automated platform. In 2009, Mr. Chang received his J.D. from The George Washington University Law School and was admitted to the California State Bar. Mr. Chang is also admitted to the District of Columbia Bar and is registered to practice before the United States Patent and Trademark Office. During law school, Mr. Chang was a member and officer of the Student Intellectual Property Law Association (SIPLA). Mr. Chang is a member of the Giles S. Rich American Inn of Court, the Washington, D.C. Inn devoted to the practice of intellectual property law and professionalism among lawyers.
